Welcome to The Marinus Scriptorium

Registered Badge of the Marinus Scriptorium:

Per pale vert and azure, an open scroll and on a chief argent a quill pen sable. This badge was registered with the College of Heralds in July of 2007. The name, “Scriptorium Marini” was deemed too generic to register so we are currently looking at different names.

The Scriptorium is a group of people who produce award scrolls for the Barony and the Kingdom. The award scrolls are based on illuminated manuscript pages of books produced in Europe, the near East and the far East during the Middle Ages. Scrolls can be a completely reproduced page, or can be an original work styled after a page or a type of illumination.

The scrolls are all hand-made from the calligraphy to the design to the painting and gilding. Some scrolls are completely produced by the same person from start to finish while others are passed around to some or all of the members of the Scriptorium and are a group production.

The scriptorium is always welcoming to new members and the only criteria to become a part of the scriptorium are to let them know you want to join and to show up at the meetings. You do not have to attend all of the meetings to be a member, though we hope you can make it to a few now and then. You do not have to have any great artistic talent to be a member either. Most of our members have one or two areas that they specialize in and not everyone does calligraphy or gilding while others excel in those areas. Most of the skills to produce scrolls can be taught and do not require raw artistic talent. Those who like to “color” find it easy to switch to painting in a design drawn by someone else with just a few tips. Some trace part or all of their designs rather than drawing them freehand. The “art” is learning how to use tools and techniques for the most part.

The scriptorium has enough basic materials to get people started until they can acquire their own set of paints and paper. We also teach the skills needed to produce scrolls. The scriptorium also likes people to come out and visit with them while they are working, so the meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Meeting times are normally the 2nd and 4th Sunday afternoons of each month. However they are sometimes altered to accommodate member’s schedules and event conflicts. We normally have meetings at most Marinus events as well. The location of the monthly meetings rotates between the member’s houses. Check the Baronial Calendar or e-list to find out when and where the scriptorium is meeting next.

DO YOU NEED A SCROLL???

If you would like a scroll produced, please contact Lady Brandwyn Alston of the Rift to let the scriptorium know. Please supply your registered SCA name (if you have one), your registered device (if you have one), your legal name, the name of the award, the date it was given, who gave it to you and at what event you received it. If you got a promissory note with the award, please supply a COPY of the note (not the original). Your scroll will contain the same wording unless you specify you want an alternate wording. If it is for a Kingdom award, check online with the College of Scribes to find out if that award has been assigned to someone or not. Notify the Clerk Signet that you want the scriptorium to do your scroll if it has not been assigned.

If you were given a scroll when you received your award, please notify the Clerk Signet (if it was a Kingdom level award) or the Scriptorium Head (if it was a Baronial award) so that they may keep their database accurate and will not assign the award out to someone else, thus producing an unwanted duplicate scroll.

Members of the Scriptorium would like to remind everyone that they produce these scrolls voluntarily, at their own expense because they love what they do. They donate their time and money to the Barony and the Kingdom and are not obligated to complete a scroll in a certain time limit. Please show them the courtesy of treating their work with respect and consideration should you receive a scroll at an event. As with any craft, should you want a scribe to make a scroll for you that is not assigned by The Crown or Their Excellencies, then you should be willing to exchange some other service or good for that scroll. Any agreements over commissioned work are between the individual scribe and the award recipient and not between the recipient and the Kingdom (Clerk Signet’s office) or Barony (Marinus Scriptorium).
